5 Songs… Derran Brownson (EMF)
New Order – „Bizarre Love Triangle“ (Substance 12′)
New Order! Me, Zac (Bassist von EMF Anm. d. Red.) and James (Sänger von EMF Anm. d. Red.) are huge New Order fans. Of course, me and James had the pleasure of a night in Barneys hotel suite in London after a Pet Shop Boys party! Members of Kraftwerk as well as Johnny Marr too. We just sat there staring at Barney and kept giggling to each other. He was lovely to us too. This track was our anthem to life and still is. I also had Hooky in my hotel room in The La’s Hyett Hotel for a party. Everytime New Order came on my mixtape he just smiled at me to hide my blushes and said ‚It´s alright lad‘ – even after the 20th time! Not many reach New Orders status, EMF were even named after a New Order party in Amsterdam!
Jeff Buckley – „Vancouver“
Jeff Buckleys first recordings were put out by EMFs management label bigcat. Our manager Abbo was his good friend. He was a bit of a waif who was adored by everyone. Ist´ a shame because all we kept hearing about was Jeff this/ Jeff bloody that. So us being the way we were (jealous of the new kid!). We poked fun and tried to ignore him! How crazy is that? Ignoring Jeff Buckley! But thats the way it was with us. We could of seen him 50 times and hung out a fair bit, but later on after he died we took another look and all got obsessed. Haha, but a real real loss to music. He could charm the birds from the trees with his presence. After Britpop went south he would have been HUGE! His talent was that big as most know, this song is just perfect and has everything, but still seems slightly rushed and unfinished too which it was maybe? My belly released the stars/tears amongst the stars‘ or something like that! That says it all really, truly amazing, such a sad loss.
The La´s – „Timeless Melody“ (BBC Sessions)
The Las´ were a band we always bumped into back in the 90s. Always got the impression they were not very happy doing the buisness/promotion thing! Always playing football and generally scowling at everyone. Yet they always were fine with us? A few years ago I got back in touch with Lee Mavers and we went camping together at the Kendall Calling Festival (where he was playing secretly). Me and my girlfriend set up what was basically a kitchen and cooked for the gang! Really cool setup which they did not leave unless to go on stage! Everyone had a blast and ate like kings. Lee has that mad genius aura to him. A bit sullen, a bit manboy, but a sweetheart too. The most incredible musician of our time. People in the UK clammer for pictures etc. of him because of the recluse tag he has. Which is just the way he is. I guess, beautiful kids, lovely house, but I have seen and heard him play some of the most amazing things. It´s not hard to see why he is held as the legend he is. Everyone from Eddie Vedder to Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher idolise his writing, and you know what names he has for most of them? Haha. He trusts me because I never put picture or videos online of him going about his buisness or in his studio. Never will. And it was nice to know that the only band he had any time for back in the day was EMF! At least thats´ what his best friend from childhood said! Or it could be another Lee Mavers myth!
Bob Dylan – „Idiot Wind“
Bob Dylan is a religion in my family. When he plays we all go. Mum, sister, brothers everyone! Just seen him on his last night at the Royal Albert Hall. I loved the new songs, just gotta take your Bob hat off at the door and embrace him now! Some people just dont´ get it? Blood on the tracks was always on my mums 8-track in her MG sports car. My dad bought her when she passed her driving test in the early 70s. Me and my bro would be squeezed into the back shelf with my sister up front waiting for the chorus: „eeeyyyiiiidiott weeeeeend“. God someones getting put out to graze in that song. Someones getting it full bore, it drifts between putting someone in their place and going into some other place? Our familys motto is „anyone who dont´ like Dylan/dont´ like music, and not to be trusted!“ He has done too much. I still air caution with anyone who hates Dylan. I think they must be from another planet! Sent here to undo the church of Bob!
John Martyn – „May You Never“
I was going to put another Dylan song in „Tell Me It Isnt´ True“ from „Nashville Skyline“. But in my head I thought I would put John Martyn in, who is someone I have not heard that much. But whoooahh, ist´ all there boys and girls! I love the live version from one of his last shows where he is in a wheelchair, The little giggle he does after the 2nd verse is sooo sweet for a man who was a bit on the wild side! Priceless! I know his daughter through an old girlfriend and was always made aware that he was a bit of a genius from the people around her. Never her of course because I got the feeling the relationship was a wee bit strained. But as usual I kept 200 feet away from his records at the time because of that. Silly boy!
